The personal diary came into being in the late 18th century, as a result of various activities requiring the recording of daily observations and occupations. Although most early diaries remained in the private sphere, some were published. They provide a means for researchers today to understand the daily preoccupations of their authors: the politicians, soldiers, prisoners, women writers and students of past eras.
